The third Sunday of each November has been named the International Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims by the General Assembly of the United Nations. This year's slogan of the day is "Vital post-crash actions: Medical Care, Investigation, Justice".

In 2004, World Health Day which is held each year by WHO was dedicated to road safety issues for the first time.Simultaneously, in different parts of the world, institutions supporting road safety hosted several programs and events aimed at enhancing awareness on injuries caused by road accidents and their severe consequences for societies. They attempted to convey a single message; that traffic accidents are preventable. The motto of this global event was defined "Road Safety cannot be accidental". This mot to emphasizes the fact that road safety does not happen by accident, but through the deliberate efforts of individuals and different sections of society, including governments and nongovernmental.

At this event, World Health Organization and World Bank released a joint report entitled"World report on road traffic injury prevention". The report, contains the emphatic concerns of the two institutions about the fact that the existing level of road traffic injuries is highly unacceptable and avoidable.

According to a part of this report:'Reduction of road traffic accidents can assist the process of achieving the Millennium Development Goals, goals which wants to halve poverty and reduce child mortality dramatically. . . Today is the time for action. Road safety is not an accidental issue. It requires strong political will and concerted, sustained efforts in various sections. Today's action will save many lives. We, a dvise sections of society as well as the governments to adopt and apply the key recommendations of this report".

A large number of deaths due to accidents made the UN General Assembly name the third Sunday in November of each year as the International Day of Remembrance of Victims of road accidents in 26 October 2005.

World's Road Transport Organization has released an exhaustive list of victims of road accidents worldwide indicating that despite of increased vehicle safety and appropriate urban infrastructures for safe road designation, the number of road casualties was very high in 2013, reflecting lack of attention to transport and traffic regulations among drivers. This organization has declared that each year, 100,000 Iranian citizens die in traffic accidents which is remarkable compared to other countries. Iran, Afghanistan, the United Arabic Emirates, Egypt, Iraq, Senegal, Tunisia and Kazakhstan have the world's highest mortalities due to road accidents.
